Sometimes, all it takes is a different view to change the way you see things.
At Keith Junior High School, Redwood Prime Realty is preparing to transform the former cafeteria into five new apartment units. While the space is being renovated, there is another feature of the property that stands out: the view from the top of the hill.
From Keith, you can see a long way across the Altoona area. On a clear day, you can even see toward Hollidaysburg. That kind of view is a great reminder of the importance of perspective.
Getting Above the Mess
When you're sitting down in a hole, all you can see is what's immediately around you. It can be difficult to see what is coming or recognize opportunities that may be farther ahead.
But when you get to the top of a hill, your view changes. You can see farther, recognize what's ahead, and get a better understanding of the bigger picture.
The same idea applies to business and real estate investing.
It's important to give yourself enough perspective to recognize both potential opportunities and potential challenges before making decisions.
How Do You Gain Perspective?
Perspective doesn't happen automatically. It comes from learning, asking questions, and surrounding yourself with people who can offer different experiences and knowledge.
One way to gain perspective is through education. Read, watch, listen, ask questions, and continue learning about the things you don't know.
Another is to surround yourself with talented people. Having smart, experienced people around you can give you viewpoints you may not have considered on your own and help you make more informed decisions.
In real estate, this can be especially important. Every property, investment, and situation is different. Taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture can help you understand the potential risks and opportunities.
Perspective in Life
For Chris, one of the most important ways he gains perspective is by spending time in the Word of God each morning and asking God for perspective beyond himself.
Whether your perspective comes through faith, education, experience, mentors, or a combination of these things, taking the time to step back and look at the bigger picture can make a difference.
Just like the view from the top of Keith Junior High, sometimes getting a little higher helps you see a little farther.
As the five new apartments at Keith continue to take shape, they'll offer residents more than just a place to live. They'll also come with a view that serves as a daily reminder to look beyond what's immediately in front of you.
Keep learning. Surround yourself with good people. Look beyond the immediate situation. And don't be afraid to get a different perspective.
