For those of you from Altoona who are part of the city’s rich basketball history, you probably already recognize where we are. But for everyone else, we’re coming to you live from the historic boys gym inside Keith Junior High School.
This space holds so many memories for generations of local students and athletes. From gym class victories and tough losses to packed bleachers and unforgettable moments on the court, this gym has always been a part of Altoona’s story. The iconic scoreboard still hangs in the back, the original flooring remains in place, and even the hoops, wall padding, and bleachers are still here — carefully preserved as a reminder of the building’s legacy.
Today, that legacy is entering a new chapter.
Now part of the Keith Hilltop Apartments project, the gym has been brought back to life with a renewed sense of purpose. Rather than letting this historic space fade away, it’s being reimagined as a place that can continue serving the community in meaningful ways.
One exciting partnership already underway is with the Joshua House organization and its Cross Town Basketball league. While league games are hosted in Building 2, this restored gym will now be used for practices and additional community activities throughout the year.
The goal has always been bigger than restoration alone. It’s about preserving the heart of the building while creating opportunities for future generations to gather, compete, and build memories of their own.
This floor is no longer just a reminder of the past — it’s becoming part of Altoona’s future once again.
