Brightening the Future of Keith Junior High

Another exciting renovation is underway inside Keith Junior High School — and sometimes the smallest design changes can make the biggest impact.

On the third floor hallways, one of the next improvements focuses on something many people may not immediately notice at first: the ceilings.

The original developer painted the ceilings a dark blue in an effort to create a sky-like atmosphere throughout the corridors. While creative in concept, the darker tones have also made parts of the hallways feel much heavier and dimmer over time. Looking down the long stretches of corridor, the space can feel surprisingly gloomy despite the incredible character of the building itself.

To test a brighter direction, a small section of the hallway ceiling has already been repainted white — and the difference is dramatic.

The lighter finish instantly opens the space up, reflects more light throughout the hallway, and gives the area a cleaner, more welcoming feel while still preserving the historic charm of the building. Once paired with updated lighting and new bulbs, the transformation is expected to completely change the atmosphere of the floor.

Now the big question becomes: how far should the redesign go? One option is to keep the original brown locker accents while only painting the upper ceiling and wall sections white. Another possibility is carrying the brighter color palette throughout the entire hallway for an even more modern and refreshed appearance.

That balance between restoration and modernization is part of what makes every decision at Keith so important. The goal has never been to erase the building’s history — it’s to enhance it while creating spaces people genuinely enjoy living in and walking through every day.

As renovations continue, each update brings Keith Hilltop Terrace one step closer to blending historic architecture with modern comfort and design.

Have an opinion on the hallway design? The project team would love to hear it.
