Restoring Keith Junior High: Letting a Historic Landmark Shine Again

Early mornings at Keith Junior High School offer a perfect reminder of why the building has become such a beloved landmark. As the morning sun rises, the front of the historic structure lights up beautifully, highlighting the architecture and presence that have defined the property for generations.

Recently, significant work has been taking place to help preserve and restore that appearance.

One of the largest projects throughout the winter involved removing dead and overgrown trees surrounding the building. Many of the trees had grown too close to the structure, causing damage while also creating maintenance and safety concerns from falling limbs, leaves, and debris around sidewalks and entrances.

With those trees now cleared away, the transformation has been dramatic. The building once again stands prominently above the surrounding area, allowing its scale and historic beauty to fully come into view.

Additional restoration efforts are already planned, including pressure washing the exterior and repointing sections of brickwork, particularly around stairways and lower masonry areas. These improvements are aimed not only at preserving the building structurally, but also at restoring the visual character that makes Keith Junior High such an important part of the city’s identity.

For many involved in the project, the goal goes beyond renovation alone. It is about honoring a building that has long been part of the community skyline and ensuring it continues to stand proudly for years to come.

On mornings like this, with sunlight hitting the façade just right, it becomes easy to see why so many people consider it one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.
