Every hallway inside Keith Junior High School seems to carry a story — and sometimes the most memorable ones come from the people who walked these halls decades ago.
Recently, while touring the building, an older alumnus shared a story from his days as a student here that immediately transported everyone in the room back in time.
Standing inside the old boys locker room, he pointed toward the area outside the gym teachers’ office and began reminiscing about what school life was like years ago. He talked about how the gym teachers even had their own private shower area — something that felt pretty advanced for its time.
But then came the story that really caught everyone’s attention.
According to him, above one of the locker room doors there used to be a hanging bar. He claimed students would have to hang from it while gym teachers disciplined them with paddles. Different times, different rules, and definitely a different era of school culture.
Whether every detail is exactly as remembered or not, stories like these are what make this building so special. They remind us that Keith wasn’t just a school — it was a place filled with
unforgettable moments, traditions, personalities, and experiences that generations of Altoona residents still talk about today.
One of the most exciting parts of restoring this historic property has been hearing these memories firsthand. Every room seems to unlock another piece of local history, and every alumnus brings a new perspective on what life at Keith was like.
If you attended Keith Junior High and remember stories like this — or have memories of your own — we’d love to hear them. These shared experiences are part of what keeps the spirit of the building alive.
