A Look Inside the Old Keith Gym: Discovering Pieces of Altoona’s History

Transcript:

Sometimes, the most interesting parts of a building are the things you never expected to find.

Last week, I received a few pictures of workers inside the old gym at Keith. I wasn’t entirely sure what they were working on, so I decided to stop by and see for myself. While some of the work involved removing fixtures from the ceiling, I discovered something even more exciting: the original gym lockers!

Seeing those lockers for the first time was a special moment. I had a feeling they had to be somewhere in the building, but I had never actually seen them before. Naturally, I tried opening a few, but it looks like a code may be needed to get inside.

It got me wondering how many people have memories attached to those lockers. Do any of the old numbers look familiar? How many students once stood in front of them to get ready for class, gym, or the next part of their day?

More Than Just an Old Gym

As I continued exploring, I noticed even more details that made the space feel special. The original walls, still showing that familiar Keith green, were another reminder of the building’s past. There was also a small room that may have once been used for storage.

Standing inside the gym, I was struck by how quiet it was. The sound seemed almost muted, creating an unusual feeling as I walked through a space that was once likely filled with students, conversations, and activity.

It is easy to look at an older building and see only what needs to be repaired or replaced. But taking the time to look closer can reveal so much more. Original lockers, walls, and other architectural details tell a story that cannot simply be recreated.

Preserving Altoona’s History

Exploring the old gym was a reminder of just how much history exists throughout Altoona and the surrounding communities. Buildings like this hold pieces of the past that are worth discovering and, whenever possible, preserving.

At Redwood Prime Realty, we believe in building better communities. Part of that means recognizing the value of existing spaces and understanding that revitalization can be about more than creating something new. It can also mean taking care of what is already here and finding ways to carry its history forward.

There is still plenty to discover inside the old gym, and I am looking forward to seeing what else turns up.
