What does a great leader look like when everything is going wrong?
Years ago, I was given an illustration that has stayed with me. It was a picture of a stormy sea with a ship being tossed back and forth by the waves. The sailors were struggling, but at the helm stood the captain—calm, focused, and steadfast, keeping his eyes toward the horizon and continuing to move the ship forward.
That picture changed the way I think about leadership.
Great leadership isn't about living a life without problems. Problems are inevitable. In fact, the more you build, accomplish, and take on, the bigger and more frequent those problems can become.
The goal isn't to avoid the storm.
The goal is to remain steadfast at the helm while the storm rages around you.
Steadfast and Immovable
The Apostle Paul gives us a powerful reminder in Scripture. After speaking about Christ's victory over death, he encourages believers to be steadfast and immovable.
That message carries tremendous weight for anyone in a position of leadership.
If we truly believe that even the worst thing life can bring—death itself—has already been defeated through Christ, then we don't have to lead from a place of fear.
We can lead with confidence.
We can remain steady when circumstances aren't.
We can keep moving forward when the path isn't clear.
Your Team Looks to You
When a storm hits a ship, the crew naturally looks toward the captain. The captain's response matters because confidence—or fear—can spread throughout the entire ship.
Leadership works the same way.
Whether you're leading a business, a team, a family, or simply trying to lead well in your own sphere of influence, people are watching how you respond when things get difficult.
They don't need you to pretend everything is perfect.
They need you to be steady.
There will always be something to deal with—financial challenges, difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, or circumstances completely outside of your control. Being a great leader doesn't mean you won't face those things. It means you don't allow them to take you away from the helm.
Leading Without Fear
For those of us who place our confidence in Christ, we have a foundation that circumstances cannot take away.
Christ has already defeated the ultimate enemy.
Because of that, we can face today's storms without allowing fear to dictate our decisions. We can stay focused on the horizon, remain steadfast, and continue moving forward.
The storm may be real.
The problems may be significant.
But our confidence doesn't have to depend on calm waters.
Great leaders don't always control the storm. They control how they stand at the helm.
So whatever you're facing today, stay steadfast. Stay immovable. Keep your eyes forward and lead with the confidence, love, and power that Christ provides.
